Counselling for Young Adults (18 – 25 years)

Tunbridge WellS - Kent

Your late teens and early twenties can be an exciting time, but they can also feel overwhelming. This stage of life often comes with big changes, new responsibilities, and important decisions about identity, relationships, study, work, and the future.

Our ‘young adult’ counselling service is specifically designed for those aged 18–25, recognising that this age group has unique emotional, social, and developmental needs. Whether you are navigating anxiety, low mood, stress, relationships, life transitions or feeling stuck or unsure, you don’t have to face it alone.

Specialist Support for This Life Stage

We understand that counselling for young adults is not quite the same as counselling for children or older adults. That is why this part of our service is run by a counsellor who is specifically and clinically trained and experienced in working with under 25 year olds.

This specialised training means a strong understanding of the challenges common in early adulthood, age-appropriate therapeutic approaches, a safe and respectful space that supports independence, identity development, and confidence, and support that meets you where you are, without judgement.

For some clients in their late teens, parents or caregivers may be involved in organising appointments or contributing financially. Our counsellor is experienced and specifically trained in working respectfully within this dynamic. The young adult remains at the centre of the counselling process, with their privacy, autonomy, and confidentiality carefully protected, while also recognising the role parents may play in practical or supportive ways. This balanced approach helps create a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship that honours the client’s independence while thoughtfully acknowledging parent involvement where appropriate and if consented to.

Introducing our counsellor

Paula

Paula is a counsellor who works exclusively with young people and young adults up to the age of 25 years. Her approach is flexible, relational, and natural. Most sessions are conversational, focusing on making sense of what is going on, putting words to difficult experiences, and working through thoughts and feelings that may feel confusing or overwhelming.

Some young people come to counselling knowing exactly what they want to talk about, whilst others arrive feeling unsure, blank, or uncertain where to begin — all of which Paula is experienced in working with.
Paula recognises that talking is not always where someone’s best processing happens. Where appropriate, sessions may also incorporate images, creative materials, games, or other activities. Working visually or engaging in practical activities can reduce pressure and support communication in a more comfortable and accessible way. Young people are not expected to sit still, maintain eye contact, or engage in conversation in ways that feel unnatural to them.
Rather than following a rigid script or manual, Paula adapts her approach to the individual. For those who benefit from a more active style of therapy, she can take a more directive approach than traditional counselling models. She will actively support young people to structure their thoughts, recognise patterns, and navigate situations that may feel messy, stuck, or emotionally overwhelming.
Many of the young adults Paula works with appear to manage outwardly whilst struggling internally, particularly during periods of transition such as moving on from school into adulthood. She frequently supports individuals who are neurodivergent or experiencing difficulties related to anxiety, low mood, burnout, identity, past experiences, unhelpful coping strategies, or challenging relationships — often where several of these factors overlap.
Paula’s role is to help young people understand what may be contributing to their difficulties, explore where certain coping patterns may have developed from, and consider what may need to change moving forward. She works in a clear, grounded, and collaborative way, avoiding unnecessary jargon and regularly checking that the young person feels understood.
Whilst Paula does not push for change before someone feels ready, she remains actively engaged throughout the therapeutic process. Her aim is to help young people develop a clearer understanding of themselves, respond to themselves with greater compassion and less judgement, and move towards a way of living that feels more authentic, manageable, and aligned with who they are becoming.

Step

Please fill in the brief form at the link below and our Client Co-ordinator will contact you to book in your first session with Paula. She can also chat through the process with you and answer any questions.

If you would prefer not to speak on the phone to our Client Co-ordinator and just want to book an initial session with Paula, please click the ‘just email me’ option on the form.

Once the date and time of the first session has been confirmed, Paula will arrange a brief phone call with you, ahead of your initial session.

Step

Please attend the clinic at the time and date of your agreed initial session. Paula will be there waiting for you.

This first session is an opportunity to get a sense of whether counselling feels right for you. There is no pressure to commit beyond this session. You can let Paula know during the session if you would like to continue working with her, or you are welcome to take some time to think it over and email afterwards once you have decided.

If you continue, sessions are usually held weekly at the same time each week. All sessions are charged at £85, inclusive of VAT.

While we have a specialist young adult counsellor, Paula, who is clinically trained and experienced in working specifically with this age group, we also recognise that choosing the right counsellor is a very personal decision.

Our general adult counselling service includes a number of qualified therapists who are able to work with clients aged 18 and over. Although they may not specialise specifically in young adults in the same way as Paula, they are all appropriately trained and experienced to provide counselling support for adults.

We encourage you to explore the different therapist profiles to find someone who feels like the right fit for you. Please read more here.
