ADHD assessment: Clinical guidance
Our psychology team provides comprehensive assessments and diagnoses for adults (18+) who may be experiencing symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
We strictly adhere to the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines, which set out the clinical standards for ADHD assessment and diagnosis in adults.
This means your assessment would be in line with NHS protocols. This is essential for the clinical validity and external acceptance of any diagnostic report.
Our assessment: Step-by-step process
We offer a highly comprehensive and clinically rigorous ADHD assessment drawing on multiple sources of evidence to ensure a thorough and balanced evaluation. Please read more about the process below.
Step 1: Initial Screening
We begin with a brief set of screening questions to determine whether an ADHD assessment is an appropriate pathway for you at this stage. This is a completely free telephone call with our Client Co-ordinator and there is no obligation to book with us after.
Step 2: Pre-Assessment Questionnaires and Background Information
Once your assessment has been booked, we will send you a comprehensive set of forms to complete, including developmental and personal history, family and educational background, and standardised ADHD rating scales (adult and retrospective childhood measures).
These questionnaires form an important part of the assessment by providing structured information across your lifespan. By sending these to you in advance, you can carefully consider your responses in your own time.
Step 3: Clinical Interview (In-Person Assessment)
Your clinical interview will take place in person at the clinic and will last approximately 2-3 hours.
During this appointment, our qualified Psychologist will conduct a detailed face-to-face assessment exploring current ADHD symptoms, childhood presentation, educational and occupational history, mental health history, and day-to-day functioning.
We strongly encourage you to bring an ‘informant’ to this appointment where possible. This may be a parent, sibling, partner, or close friend who knows you well and, ideally, has known you over a long period of time. Their input can be extremely valuable in helping to identify lifelong patterns of symptoms.
Step 4: Objective Computer-Based Testing (QbCheck)
As part of every adult ADHD assessment, we include an online QbCheck computer-based test.
A QbCheck provides objective data on attention, impulsivity, and activity levels and is widely used in both NHS and private services to support diagnostic decision-making.
Step 5: Clinical Decision and Feedback
Your Psychologist will integrate all available information, including questionnaire data, developmental history, clinical interview findings, informant input (if provided) and the QbCheck results. They will also review any additional supporting information (where available), such as school reports, previous assessments, or relevant medical or educational records that you may wish to share.
Once this information has been considered, the Psychologist will make a final clinical decision.
We understand that waiting for results can feel stressful, so we arrange a feedback consultation by telephone or video to discuss the outcome of the assessment before the written report is issued. This typically takes place within seven to ten days of the assessment, provided all paperwork has been returned.
Step 6: Formal Diagnostic Report
A comprehensive written diagnostic report will be provided within 21 working days of your assessment.
Although you will already know the outcome from the feeback session, the report will outline the diagnostic conclusion, the clinical rationale for the decision, a summary of assessment findings, and clear recommendations for treatment, support, and reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
We strongly encourage clients to then share this with your GP, employer, or other relevant professionals.
Step 7: Post-Assessment Support
We would encourage you to share your report with the NHS to explore any follow-up support that may be available. Should you also wish to access private support following your assessment, we can offer:
• ADHD psychoeducation sessions (read more here)
• Therapeutic support (e.g. counselling, CBT or neurodiversity coaching)
• Follow up assessments for co-occuring conditions
Will the report be accepted by the NHS?
We understand how important it is for clients to feel confident that a private ADHD assessment will be recognised by NHS services. By following NICE guidelines and established best-practice standards, our assessments are designed to meet national clinical expectations.
While no private clinic can ever guarantee NHS acceptance, as final decisions rest with individual services and local policies, we can share that in the five years we have been providing assessments through our partner clinics, we have not encountered a case where one of our reports has been rejected.
Many of our clients are healthcare professionals who are familiar with NHS diagnostic standards.
Fees
The total cost of the ADHD assessment is £1295.
This fee includes the initial screening, comprehensive clinical interview, standardised questionnaires, online QbCheck test, feedback consultation, and full written diagnostic report. A deposit is payable in advance to secure your assessment date, with the remaining balance payable in instalments ahead of your assessment date.
Medication Pathway
If you wish to pursue medication following diagnosis, we offer a streamlined referral pathway to partner psychiatrists for private prescriptions. Appointments are typically available within one week of diagnosis. Please note that separate psychiatry fees apply and vary depending on clinical need and the psychiatrist you choose. Once treatment has been started and your medication is stable, your GP may be able to take over prescribing under a shared care agreement. Shared care arrangements are decided by individual GP practices and local NHS policies, so this cannot be guaranteed. If shared care is not available, you may need to continue prescriptions through a private provider.
