Combined ADHD and Autism Assessment
Tunbridge Wells - Kent
Dual assessment process
Our multidisciplinary team provides a comprehensive combined assessment for adults (18+) who may be experiencing features of ADHD, autism, or both. This pathway is designed for people whose experiences span more than one neurodevelopmental profile, or where it is not yet clear which diagnosis (or diagnoses) best explains their difficulties.
We follow NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines and best-practice standards for both ADHD and autism assessments in adults, using multiple sources of evidence and a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure a thorough, ethical, and clinically robust evaluation. This means your assessment would be in line with NHS protocols. This is essential for the clinical validity and external acceptance of any diagnostic report.
Who is this assessment for?
A combined ADHD and autism assessment may be helpful if you:
- Recognise traits of both ADHD and autism
- Have had mixed or unclear screening results in the past
- Have complex or overlapping difficulties with attention, organisation, social communication, sensory processing, or regulation
- Have been told “it could be ADHD or autism” and want clearer answers
- Would prefer a single, joined-up assessment rather than two separate pathways
Our assessment approach
We offer a robust and clinically rigorous combined assessment drawing on multiple sources of evidence to ensure a thorough and balanced evaluation combined pathway that fully assesses both ADHD and autism. This allows us to explore areas of overlap and difference and to reach clear, evidence-based clinical conclusions.
Step 1: Free Initial Suitability Call
Your first step is a free telephone call with our Client Co-ordinator.
During this call, we will ask brief screening questions relating to ADHD and autism to check your suitability for an assessment, and explain the full combined process.
There is no obligation to proceed after this call.
Step 2: Pre-Assessment Questionnaires and Background Information
Once your assessment is booked, we will send you a comprehensive set of forms to complete, including:
• Developmental and personal history
• Educational and occupational background
• Standardised ADHD and autism questionnaires
• Mental health screening measures
These provide structured information across your lifespan and form a key part of the assessment. They are sent in advance of your first appointment so you can take time to consider your answers.
Step 3: Clinical Interview (In-Person)
You will attend a face-to-face clinical interview with one of our qualified psychologists, lasting approximately 2–3 hours. During this session, we will explore your current and childhood presentation, as well as your educational and occupational history, mental health history, and day-to-day functioning. We will also observe aspects such as your communication style, social interaction, and any sensory or behavioural patterns.
We strongly encourage you to bring an ‘informant’ to this appointment where possible. This may be a parent, sibling, partner, or close friend who knows you well and, ideally, has known you over a long period of time. Their input can be extremely valuable in helping to identify lifelong patterns of symptoms.
Step 4: Objective and Specialist Assessments
As part of the combined assessment, as well as the clinical Iinterview, there will be three further assessments.
1. ADHD Objective Testing (QbCheck)
You will complete a QbCheck, a computer-based assessment that provides objective data on attention, impulsivity, and activity levels, helping to inform the assessment of ADHD. This is carried out remotely, so you can do this from home.
2. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2)
The ADOS-2 is a structured, standardised assessment carried out with our speech and language therapist. It explores social communication, interaction and use of verbal and non-verbal communication, and behavioural patterns. This appointment lasts around 1 hour and takes place in the clinic (usually on a different date to your clinical interview).
3. Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R)
The ADI-R is a detailed developmental interview conducted with an informant (ideally someone who has known you since childhood). It explores early development, communication, social relationships, and behavioural patterns across your lifespan. This is carried out by telephone or video call (so your informant does not need to come into the clinic) and typically lasts around 2 hours. If a childhood informant is not available, alternative sources of developmental information will be discussed with you.
Step 5: Clinical Integration and Decision-Making
All information is brought together, including:
• Questionnaires and history forms
• Clinical interview findings
• QbCheck results
• ADOS-2 observations
• ADI-R developmental history
• Informant input and clinical observations
Diagnostic decisions are made using clinical judgement and NICE criteria, with joint input from the psychologist and speech and language therapist for the autism component.
Step 6: Feedback Appointment
We understand that waiting for results can feel stressful, so we arrange a feedback consultation by telephone or video to discuss the outcome of the assessment before the written report is issued. You will be able to discuss the outcome of the assessment and the clinical reasoning behind the conclusions.
Step 7: Comprehensive Diagnostic Report
You will receive a full written and detailed diagnostic report, including the diagnostic conclusions (ADHD, autism, both, or neither) and a clear explanation of how criteria were met (or not met). Practical recommendations for work, education, and daily life will also be included.
The report will be sent within 21 working days of your final appointment. You will, however, already have received your outcome during the feedback session.
Post-assessment support
We would encourage you to share your report with the NHS to explore any follow-up support that may be available. Should you also wish to access private support following your assessment, we can offer:
• Autism & ADHD psychoeducation sessions (read more here)
• Therapeutic support (e.g. counselling, CBT or neurodiversity coaching)
• Follow up assessments for co-occuring conditions
We also offer a medication referral pathway for ADHD, where clinically appropriate and desired (via partner psychiatrists; separate fees apply).
Fees
The Combined ADHD and autism Assessment fees are charged at £3,345.
This includes the full assessment process (3 appointments and the computer test), the feedback appointment, and the comprehensive written report. A deposit is required to secure your appointment, with the remaining balance payable in instalments.
Please note that a stand-alone ADHD assessment is £1,295, and a stand-alone autism assessment is £2,700. If completed separately, the total cost would be £3,995.
A combined assessment allows some elements of the process to be completed concurrently, reducing duplication. As a result, the combined assessment is £650 less than completing the assessments individually.
