What is Couples Counselling?

Couples counselling is a form of talking therapy that aims to support relationships, improve communication, and help partners navigate challenges together. Sessions focus on open and guided conversation between you and your partner, at a pace that feels manageable for both of you. Your therapist will offer a confidential, non-judgemental space where each of you can be heard, understood, and supported. The focus is not on taking sides, but on helping you understand patterns in your relationship, express needs more clearly, and find healthier ways of relating to one another.

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from couples counselling; it can be helpful for both resolving current difficulties and strengthening your relationship for the future.

Our fully qualified therapist provides couples counselling for partners who want to improve their relationship, work through difficulties, or strengthen their connection. Sessions are run face to face from our private, welcoming, and fully equipped therapy rooms.

Our couples counsellor, Amelia, is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and practises in line with its ethical framework and professional standards. Amelia works in a respectful, balanced, and collaborative way, using evidence-based talking therapies to support both partners in exploring their relationship in a safe and supportive space.

Amelia

Couples Counsellor

Amelia has worked with couples navigating a wide range of relational challenges, including communication difficulties, separation and divorce, intimacy and sexual concerns, the impact of mental health difficulties, trauma, and issues related to identity, including racial and gender experiences. She also has particular expertise in supporting neurodiverse couples, including those affected by ADHD, ASC, and OCD.

In her couples work, Amelia draws on evidence-based therapeutic models to help partners strengthen and better understand their relationships. These approaches may include Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), The Gottman Method, Solution Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. Depending on the needs of the couple, sessions may focus on present-day interactions (‘the here and now’) or explore intergenerational patterns within family systems that may be shaping current dynamics.

Across all approaches, Amelia uses a range of practical and relational techniques, including reflective listening, pattern tracking, developing love maps, and encouraging communication from the ‘I’ position. These techniques support couples in reducing blame, increasing understanding, and fostering a greater sense of connection, empowerment, and emotional safety.
Amelia places strong emphasis on creating a collaborative and balanced therapeutic space, where both partners feel heard, respected, and supported in working towards meaningful change.

Amelia holds a CPCAB Diploma in Working with Children & Young People and a CPCAB Diploma in Working with Adults, alongside a postgraduate qualification from the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust in Working with Individuals, Couples & Families. She is currently completing a Master’s degree in Systemic Family Psychotherapy. Amelia also holds a Level 4 British Psychological Society Certificate in Clinical Supervision and provides clinical guidance to other therapists. She additionally is a registered member of The Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT).

Couples counselling can help you to:

Couples counselling does not involve being judged, blamed, or told who is ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ Instead, it supports both partners to develop insight, empathy, and more constructive ways of relating to each other.

Our process

To make an initial appointment, please contact us via the form below and our Client Co-ordinator will be in touch to book in your first session with Amelia.

Before the initial session, Amelia will contact you by phone to briefly discuss your reasons for seeking couples counselling and gather some background information.

This first session is an opportunity for both of you to meet with Amelia, talk about what brings you to couples counselling, and get a sense of whether this way of working feels right for you.

The cost of this initial consultation is £125, inclusive of VAT.

Following the initial consultation, you may choose to continue with a block of weekly sessions. There is no minimum commitment, and the number of sessions is entirely your choice. However, meaningful and lasting change in relationships often takes time and consistency.

Ongoing sessions are £125, inclusive of VAT, and are usually paid for weekly, or monthly.

Sessions usually take place once a week, at the same day and time each week where possible, to provide consistency and continuity.

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some couples come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others choose longer-term, more in-depth work. Amelia will regularly review progress with you and discuss what feels most helpful for your relationship.
